Complaint by: P. Rajan on September 30, 2011, 8:56 pm in Indian Railways

I travelled in train no. 16108 Mangalor- Chennai Express on 25-09-2011
in II sleeper and my berth was S9-23 SL and the ticket was booked PNR
no. 431-3456007 under Tatkal which is a confirmed one. After I boarded
the train I took my berth and it left TPJ at 10.10 p.m.(schedule time
is 22.00 hours)

At Srirangam one person came and claimed that he had the same berth
allotted to him. I was shocked and the Ticket examiner came to our
compartment around 11.30 p.m and while checking our tickets he
informed that my ticket was upgraded to B3/51. He roughly said that I
should move to that allotted berth in the AC coach. I told him that
now the time was around 11.30 and I carried luggage and the coach is
very far from my compartment and I refused to go as I had no
intimation before I boarded the train. He claimed that my name in the
chart was in the AC coach. I said as a courtesy the Railway should
have intimated to me once the upgraded list of passengers should have
been informed before boarding the train. Though he agreed my concern
he said that he could not do any thing. Since I was stubburn finally
he alloted the other person to another berth.

Like me several passengers with their family and children in the mid
night where shifted to AC coach in the pretext of upgraded quota. It
is very unfair on the part of Railways though they allot the
waitlisting passengers confirmation berth at the same time they forget
the inconvenience and unfair to the passengers who have confirmed
berth and asking them to shift at the midnight. Will the authorities
look into this and do find some way to avoid this situation? One way
the railway must inform those passengers in advance and send SMS as
they collect our mobile no. at the time of filling up the forms.

I agree. This happened to me twice. I was lucky enough to find it out at the boarding station before the train started. Both times I had reserved tickets through IRCTC, which has my mobile number. The tickets reservation was intimated through SMS, but not the upgrades. There is no communication link between IRCTC and Railways for such upgrades. In this tecnological age, that shouldn't be too difficult to do. It is only a matter of changing the mindset.
